Digitimes, a technology industry watcher in Taiwan, reports that Apple is working on an upgraded iPad and iPhone. The tablet computer upgrades include a larger processor and the addition of a smaller device to the product line. This could open up the great tablet to a wider customer base seeking a more portable device.

iPad

Mingchi Kuo, senior analyst with Digitimes Research, reports that an ARM Cortex A9-based processor will replace the Apple A4 processor currently used in the iPad. This will double the RAM capacity of the device to an impressive 512 MB. The current 256 MB RAM is not shabby by any means and is the same amount included in the iPhone 3GS.

A 7.0 inch iPad is also reportedly being developed, resulting in a product offering that is a bit smaller than the current 9.7 inch version. The more compact device will include the Cortex A9 processor, an IPS panel, and a 1024×768 screen resolution. This is the same excellent resolution included in the current 9.7 inch iPad. IPS (in-plane switching) is the best type of LCD panel technology. It provides excellent color accuracy and image quality and allows for viewing angles up to 178 degrees.

Digitimes also reports that Apple named Pegatron Technology as the manufacturer of a CDMA iPhone. The device is expected to begin production in December and will be carried by Verizon Wireless. There is no word when the upgraded iPad and smaller tablet device will go into production.

Apple is keeping its mouth shut when it comes to these unsubstantiated rumors regarding upgrades. Digitimes has gone so far as to predict when the technology giant will begin talking. It estimates word from Apple to hit the streets during the first few months in 2011. If prospective consumers are able to wait that long to find out if the rumors are true, they may be rewarded by snagging an upgraded iPad.
