The developer Clink Apps released a major upgrade to its weather app for the iPad. The Weather 2 contains support for iPhone 4, iOS 4, a redesigned interface, new customization options, and background updating. This app can be used on either the iPad or an iPhone running iOS 3.0 or higher and costs $1 in the App Store.

The Weather 2

A new interface allows users to view only the weather data they desire. Another interface change is the addition of a toolbar characterized by icons. This allows users to quickly switch between pages that contain a weekly forecast, current temperature, and area radar. The radar report has been improved and the map expands to encompass nearly the entire screen.

Users can add new pages to their viewing screen and customize these with widgets representing ten different types of data. The widgets represent things like forecast, wind speed, humidity, visibility, and air pressure. When the app is viewed on the iPad, it has a multiple day forecast bar static across the bottom of the page and a static radar map at the top.

If a Webcam is present in the geographic area, users can turn on the Webcam view to see current conditions. When the iPad receives an iOS 4 upgrade, it will be able to take advantage of the multitasking support and background location feature included in the Weather 2 app. With background location, the app can actively track where users are and update the weather data to reflect that spot. This feature is not a default and can be shut off to conserve battery life.

The Weather 2 app is different from most other weather apps for the iPad. For one thing, it does not contain an overabundance of the color blue. Even better are the new interface, customization options, and other features included in this upgraded app.
