AIM for iPad is the AOL Instant Messenger service for use on the Apple iPad tablet computer. This instant messaging service is one of the most popular in the U.S. The app is free in the Apple App Store and has some great features, including social networking compatibility. However, it also has a few limitations when it comes to social networking compatibility.

This app is compatible with social networking sites like Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook and uses a Lifestream aggregator to provide status update feeds from these sites. It allows cross-platform chatting with Facebook users. App users with Facebook accounts can chat with friends, comment on friends’ statuses by clicking the pencil icon, and “like” updates using the heart icon.

The user interface on the app is uncluttered and easy to navigate. It contains icons for the buddy list, Lifestream feed, and active account. The chat window occupies one-quarter of the page, with a customizable background image and virtual keyboard occupying the remainder. The IM window contains information like availability, preferences, services, and time online. A search box allows users to quickly find someone in their buddy list.

Drawbacks of this app include Facebook connection issues such as needing to make repeated attempts when setting up a Facebook account through the app. Though app users can leave comments on Twitter, it is not possible to retweet using this app. Access to Facebook and Twitter direct messaging services using this app is also not permitted.

Since multitasking is not allowed on the iPad, users cannot run AIM for iPad while using another app. Hopefully, the planned iPad iOS 4 release will resolve this issue. Despite the restrictions within this free app, AIM for iPad is a good way for iPad owners with an AOL IM account to keep in touch with their connections.
